What items do you accept for donation?

Our most wanted items include clothing, vintage jewelry, small furniture, household items & decor, and books. View the entire list of items we accept.

Are there any items you cannot accept for donation?

We do not generally accept large items, such as large pieces of furniture or major appliances. View the entire list of items we cannot accept.

Do you pick up donations?

Because we do not accept donations of large furniture or appliances, we do not have a truck to pick up donations. Learn more about how to drop off donations.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, your donation is tax deductible.

What are the benefits of thrift shopping?

Thrift shopping has many benefits. You save money, help the environment, avoid the waste of “fast fashion,” and get to find unique items to wear and decorate your home. And it’s fun!

Should I wash thrifted clothing before wearing it?

It is always a good idea to wash thrifted clothing before wearing it for the first time.

What is your return / exchange policy?

All sales are final. We are unable to accept returns or exchanges. Thank you for your understanding.

Do donations to the Extraordinary Thrift Store stay local?

Yes! Your donations to the Extraordinary Thrift Store remain in our local community. Donations are processed and sold in our store in Carrboro. Thank you for choosing to donate and shop locally!

Is the Extraordinary Thrift Store a non-profit thrift store?

Yes. The Extraordinary Thrift Store is a local business operated by Chapel Hill-based nonprofit Extraordinary Ventures. Our mission is to create meaningful employment opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as autism. When you donate and shop at the Extraordinary Thrift Store, you contribute to creating a local disability-inclusive workforce.

What do you do with clothing that cannot be sold?

Items that cannot be sold are responsibly recycled.

Is clothing donated to public drop boxes kept locally?

No. Those public clothing drop boxes in parking lots around town are primarily operated by for-profit textile recyclers. Some items may be sold overseas.
